Hello, I’m Michael Zhang. As a traveler passionate about culture and history, I’ve explored dozens of countries and delved deep into many of China’s most iconic historical landmarks. Today, I want to take you to a section of the Great Wall near Beijing that stands out not only for its scale but also for its beauty and cultural depth — Mutianyu Great Wall. If you’re planning a meaningful and immersive trip to the Great Wall, this guide will offer you professional advice and detailed insights to help you make the most of your journey.

Mutianyu Great Wall Overview

Mutianyu Great Wall is praised as “The Most Majestic Section of the Great Wall of China.” Spanning 5,400 meters, it’s the longest fully restored section of the Great Wall in China. As a prime example of the Ming Dynasty’s military defense system, it connects Gubeikou in the east to Juyongguan in the west, having served as a strategic shield for Beijing since ancient times. With iconic features like Zhengguan Terrace, the Big Corner Tower, and Yingfei Daoyang, the wall here remains well-preserved, vividly showcasing the original charm of the Great Wall. It holds immense historical and cultural significance. Mutianyu is a nationally recognized AAAAA tourist attraction, and in 1987, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Why You Should Visit Mutianyu Great Wall

Unique Natural Scenery

Built along the mountain ridge, Mutianyu is flanked by towering granite walls reaching 7 to 8 meters high, with over 90% forest coverage. Each season offers a distinct view, with the most vibrant landscapes appearing in summer and autumn. Its raw, untouched beauty gives this section of the Wall a character that sets it apart from more commercialized areas.

Rich Historical and Cultural Significance

Mutianyu was a crucial part of the Ming Dynasty’s defense network and remains remarkably well-preserved. Each brick and watchtower carries stories of the past. Visitors can immerse themselves in history by listening to lesser-known tales told by local guides. Additionally, unique features such as double-sided battlements and horse-blocking walls showcase the sophisticated architectural ingenuity of ancient Chinese builders.

Top Things to Do in Mutianyu Great Wall

Main Attractions

“He Who Has Never Been to the Great Wall Is Not a True Man” Stone Tablet

Located at Watchtower 14, this stone carving is a must-see photo spot for visitors. It features Mao Zedong’s iconic quote from 1935, symbolizing both a motivational mantra and the deep cultural reverence the Chinese people hold for the Great Wall. For many, climbing the Wall is not only a physical achievement but also a spiritual journey.

Hero Slope

This segment, between Watchtowers 19 and 20, is the steepest stretch of Mutianyu and is famously known as “Hero Slope.” With a gradient reaching nearly 70 degrees, climbing it demands real strength and determination. Many see reaching the top as a personal victory and a symbol of endurance.

Toboggan Ride

The toboggan ride is a signature experience at Mutianyu. Stretching about 1.6 kilometers from the mountain’s peak down through lush forest and scenic wall views, it adds a thrilling end to your visit. Children under 10 must ride with an adult. Seniors over 60 are not permitted to ride. The attraction closes during rain for safety.

Mutianyu Great Wall Ticket Guide

There are many types of tickets available at Mutianyu Great Wall, including entrance tickets, cable car tickets, shuttle bus tickets, and chairlift tickets. Many first-time visitors find this confusing, so here is a detailed guide and my recommendations.

  • Entrance Ticket: There are two types — Standard Ticket (40 CNY) and Postcard Ticket (45 CNY). Both grant access to the scenic area. Most people go for the Postcard Ticket since the extra 5 CNY includes a postcard that would cost at least that much on its own.
  • Shuttle Bus Ticket: 15 CNY round trip. It’s a must-buy unless you’re arriving directly by tourist coach near the cable car station. The distance from the entrance to the ticket gate is around 6 kilometers, and the walk offers no significant views — it’s not worth the time.
  • Cable Car Ticket: One-way ride costs 100 CNY. You can purchase it on-site, as many visitors decide whether to go up or down by cable based on how they feel physically at the moment.
  • Chairlift Ticket: Also 100 CNY one-way. The primary difference from the cable car is the route — they access different parts of the wall. The chairlift uses open-style seats and runs slightly faster.
  • Toboggan Ticket: One-way 100 CNY, sold onsite. This thrilling ride winds down from the top of the mountain and is a must-try. However, lines can get long.

Ticket Purchase Options

  • Online: Via official WeChat accounts, the official website, or other travel platforms
  • Offline: Tickets can also be purchased at the site, but buying in advance online is common, often cheaper, and helps avoid waiting in lines.

Mutianyu Great Wall features watchtowers 1 through 20, divided into East, Middle, and West sections. The West section is a must-see, but for a full experience, it’s best to explore all three.

  • East Section (Towers 1–6): Views here are slightly less impressive than in the West. Tower 1, known as the Big Corner Tower, connects all three parts of the wall. Tower 4 (Zhengguan Terrace) is a hollow watchtower with unique architecture. The chairlift arrives here.
  • Middle Section (Towers 6–14): Features gentler slopes and fewer steps. While the scenery is moderate, this section becomes particularly charming in autumn.
  • West Section (Towers 14–20): The most scenic and attraction-dense area. Tower 14 is home to the “He Who Has Never Been to the Great Wall Is Not a True Man” tablet. Towers 19 to 20 feature the steep “Hero Slope” and the impressive Hero Platform.

Recommended Routes:

  • Full Route (East, West, and Middle): Ideal for most independent travelers. Take the cable car from the North Entrance to Tower 14 → walk to Tower 20 → return along the wall to Tower 6 → take the toboggan down. This route covers all the must-see spots and includes both the cable car and toboggan experience. However, it’s physically demanding and takes around 5–6 hours.
  • West Section Only: Recommended for those with limited physical capacity, or traveling with kids or seniors. Take the cable car up to Tower 14 → walk to Tower 20 → return to Tower 14 → cable car down. This route offers excellent scenery and includes key highlights such as Hero Slope and Hero Platform, with manageable physical effort.
