Hi, I’m Michael Zhang, a Chinese travel enthusiast with a passport full of stamps from five continents and dozens of countries. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep love not only for breathtaking landscapes but also for places steeped in history and culture. I enjoy feeling the pulse of a city with my own footsteps and documenting the stories I uncover along the way. Today, let me take you to the green heart of Guangzhou—Yuexiu Park, a space where Lingnan culture, natural beauty, and historical memory coexist harmoniously.

Yuexiu Park Introduction

Yuexiu Park is the largest comprehensive park in Guangzhou. It is a national AAAA-level scenic area, one of the “Top 100 Chinese Gardens,” and part of the renowned “Eight Sights of the Ram City.” It has received numerous honors, including the “Asian Golden Travel Award” for cultural uniqueness and ecological beauty in Greater China. The park’s central feature is Yuexiu Mountain, named after the Western Han dynasty ruler Zhao Tuo, who is said to have built the “Chao Han Platform” on the mountain. Today, the park serves as a major center for preserving and promoting intangible cultural heritage such as Hakka mountain songs, Wing Chun martial arts, and folk stories tied to Yuexiu Mountain.

Why You Should Visit Yuexiu Park

Yuexiu Park is a lush urban oasis offering beautiful natural scenery. Key landmarks within the park include the Five Rams Sculpture and Zhenhai Tower. The Five Rams Sculpture symbolizes an ancient legend and embodies the city’s rich cultural roots. Zhenhai Tower now serves as the main building of the Guangzhou Museum, housing numerous artifacts that trace the historical and cultural evolution of Guangzhou.

In addition to these highlights, visitors can also explore historical sites such as the Qing Dynasty Archway, the Ancient City Wall, the Sifang Artillery Fort, and the Sun Yat-sen Monument, all of which showcase the city’s heritage and continuity through the ages.

Its central location makes Yuexiu Park easy to reach. Many travelers stop by specifically to photograph the famous Five Rams Sculpture. Locals, on the other hand, often come to relax, take walks, or exercise in the serene environment.

Five Rams Sculpture

Located in the heart of Yuexiu Park, the Five Rams Sculpture stands as one of Guangzhou’s most iconic landmarks. The statue represents a local legend in which five immortals, riding on five rams, arrived in Guangzhou with sheaves of rice to bless the land with abundance and prosperity. The sculpture not only reflects the city’s mythical origins but also conveys a collective wish for a thriving future. It is a must-visit photo spot for anyone coming to Guangzhou.

Ancient City Wall

The Ancient City Wall in Yuexiu Park dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, once serving as a key defensive structure of old Guangzhou. What makes this site truly special is how centuries-old tree roots have entwined themselves along the wall’s surface, creating a dramatic “natural climbing” effect. This unique blend of human history and natural growth offers a tranquil, almost sacred forest atmosphere—perfect for contemplation or photography.

Sun Yat-sen Monument

At the top of Yuexiu Mountain stands the towering Sun Yat-sen Monument, commemorating one of China’s most revered national heroes. The monument rises impressively into the sky, engraved with Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s famous last words: “The revolution is not yet complete; all comrades must continue to work hard.” This site provides a moment for reflection and a panoramic view of the park, making it both a spiritual and visual highlight of the visit.

Today, it houses the Guangzhou Museum, making it one of the earliest museums established in China. The museum offers a rich collection that spans the city’s political, economic, and cultural evolution, and is especially appealing to those with a keen interest in deep cultural exploration.

If you prefer the bus, get off at the Yuexiu Park Stop. You can take Bus 5, 7, 21, 24, and others. This is a good option if you’re already nearby.

Calling a taxi or a rideshare is the fastest option from downtown. Travel time is about 10 to 15 minutes, costing approximately ¥15–20.

FAQ

Is Yuexiu Park stroller- and wheelchair-friendly?

Not entirely. While most paths in the park are flat, there are occasional stairs, especially the long staircase leading to the Five Rams Sculpture. To avoid the steps, you’d need to take a long detour with an elevator—which sometimes may be out of service.

Where can I store luggage?

There are lockers at both the North Gate and West Gate. During free hours (7:30 AM–6:30 PM), storage is available at no cost. Lockers can fit suitcases up to 24 inches. Anything larger won’t fit.
