Hello, I’m Michael Zhang, a travel enthusiast with extensive international experience. I’m excited to share an insider’s guide to one of China’s most treasured destinations: West Lake in Hangzhou. Famous for its rich history, cultural depth, and breathtaking beauty, West Lake has captivated travelers for centuries. This guide will take you through everything you need to know to make the most of your visit, from the must-see sights to hidden gems.

Introduction to West Lake

West Lake, also known as Qiantang Lake, is located in the western part of Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. With a catchment area of 21.22 square kilometers and a surface area of 6.38 square kilometers, it is one of the top three famous lakes in the Jiangnan region.

Beyond its beauty, West Lake also plays an essential role as an irrigation and water transport reservoir. Through a network of rivers and sluices, it supplies water to Hangzhou’s urban areas and surrounding farmland. Additionally, West Lake helps regulate the water levels of the Qiantang River, preventing flooding in the city. On June 24, 2011, the West Lake Cultural Landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its cultural significance.

West Lake Through the Seasons

Spring

In spring, West Lake bursts into life. The willow trees along the shores sprout new green leaves, and peach blossoms, cherry blossoms, and other flowers bloom in a colorful display. Visiting at this time feels like stepping into a lively Jiangnan-style ink painting. Walking along the Su Causeway or Bai Causeway, you’ll be surrounded by a vibrant landscape that’s as if painted by nature itself.

Summer

Summer at West Lake is the season for lotus flowers. The area around Curved Yard and Lotus Flowers fills with the fragrant scent of blooming lotus flowers. The lush green leaves and delicate pink flowers create a perfect contrast. Though summer temperatures may rise, the cool lake offers a refreshing respite. Visitors can enjoy leisurely boat rides across the water, watching the lotus flowers float on the serene lake.

Autumn

Autumn brings a serene, poetic atmosphere to West Lake. The most stunning view is at Pinghu Qiu Yue (Autumn Moon Over the Peaceful Lake). The trees along the shore turn golden, and in the evening, the sunset bathes the lake in a warm, golden hue. As night falls, the moon reflects on the surface of the lake, and the peaceful moonlit scene creates an unforgettable experience.

Winter

In winter, West Lake is quieter and more peaceful, offering a contrast to the bustling seasons. The Broken Bridge and the Snow scene are particularly famous during this time. After a snowfall, the bridge almost disappears into the lake, creating an ethereal, fairy-tale-like atmosphere. The stillness of the winter lake, combined with the red plum blossoms blooming in the cold, makes West Lake even more picturesque.

Things to Do in West Lake

West Lake Ten Scenic Spots

Su Causeway in Spring Dawn

Located on the west side of West Lake, Su Causeway was constructed by the famous Song Dynasty writer and official Su Dongpo during his tenure as the governor of Hangzhou. In spring mornings, the willows gently sway, mist lingers over the water, and the view is as poetic as it is picturesque. This tranquil scene has long been a favorite for visitors who enjoy leisurely strolls.

Curved Yard and Lotus Flowers

Nestled in the northwest corner of West Lake, this area was once the site of a government wine brewery. During the summer months, the lotus flowers bloom abundantly, filling the air with their sweet fragrance. This is one of the best spots for lotus viewing—walking here in the early morning or late evening, you’ll be enveloped by the scent of lotus flowers and the soft breeze, creating a truly enchanting experience.

Autumn Moon over the Peaceful Lake

Located at the western end of Bai Causeway, this spot is named for its stunning view of the moon rising over the lake on autumn nights. The shimmering water reflects the moonlight, creating a harmonious and poetic scene. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the moon, especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival when the moonlight on the lake’s surface is especially mesmerizing.

Broken Bridge and Snow

Situated at the eastern end of Bai Causeway in the northern part of West Lake, this scenic spot is a must-see in winter. After a snowfall, the Broken Bridge appears to float above the lake, its surface blending seamlessly with the water. This creates a dreamlike atmosphere that gives visitors the unique impression of a “broken” bridge that remains unbroken.

Fish Viewing at Flower Harbor

Located on the south side of Su Causeway, this spot is famous for its vibrant flowers and koi fish. In the spring, flower petals drift on the wind, while koi swim gracefully through the water. The scene creates a beautiful “flowers fall, fish play” image that will captivate your heart.

Willow Wharf and Warblers

Located in the southeast of West Lake, this spot is known for its rows of willow trees and the songs of warblers. In spring, the willow branches dance in the breeze, and the birds’ calls fill the air, creating a soft and peaceful springtime atmosphere. It feels like being immersed in a dreamlike green world.

Three Pools Mirroring the Moon

Situated in the center of West Lake, this famous site on the small island of Xiaoyingzhou is especially enchanting at night. Three stone pagodas rise from the lake, their reflections shimmering on the water’s surface under the moonlight. The scene is so beautiful that it has become one of the most iconic views of West Lake, even appearing on China’s 1 yuan banknote.

Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds

Located on the southern shore of West Lake, the Twin Peaks are a striking sight on clear days, rising above the clouds like two sharp spires. The view, especially in the early morning or after rain, is awe-inspiring, as the peaks appear to pierce through the mist, much like a traditional Chinese ink painting.

Leifeng Pagoda Sunset

Leifeng Pagoda, located on the southern shore of West Lake, offers a romantic view at sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the silhouette of the pagoda is reflected on the lake, bathed in golden light. This scene is one of the most romantic spots in West Lake, making it a perfect destination for couples.

Evening Bell of Nanping Mountain

At the Nanping Mountain on the southern shore of West Lake lies the Jingci Temple, where the sound of the evening bell is a cherished experience. At dusk, the sound of the bell rings out, echoing across the valley and creating a peaceful, meditative atmosphere. It’s as if you’ve been transported back in time to an ancient era, where the calm of the bell brings a sense of timeless tranquility.
