Hello, I’m Michael Zhang, a Chinese traveler who has explored extensively across Asia and Europe, with a strong focus on history, culture, and immersive travel experiences. In this Napahai Lake travel guide, I draw from my firsthand journey to highlight the most worthwhile scenery, the best ways to explore, and a few easy-to-miss pitfalls, so you can experience this unique highland wetland in a more efficient and meaningful way.

Napahai Lake Overview

Napahai Lake, officially known as the Napahai Lake Provincial Nature Reserve in Yunnan, covers a total area of 2,400 hectares. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, with elevations ranging from 3,800 to 4,449 meters, it forms a classic high-altitude basin landscape near Shangri-La. The reserve consists of a network of freshwater ponds and marshes, fed by eight small rivers. During the rainy season, the lake expands to over 1,000 hectares, while in the dry season, it shrinks to around 500 hectares.

As a protected ecological zone, Napahai Lake plays a key role in conserving rare bird species such as the black-necked crane, black stork, and grey crane, all listed under China’s national protection system, along with large numbers of migratory and overwintering waterbirds. The wetland ecosystem here is also botanically significant, featuring diverse aquatic plant communities, including rare Arctic-alpine species such as Hippuris vulgaris.

  • Address: Huanhu Road, Shangri-La, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Apple Maps/Amap)
  • Opening Hours: 24 hours
  • Recommended Visit Duration: 6 to 7 hours. While you can stop briefly for photos, cycling around Napahai Lake offers a much richer experience.
  • Best Time to Visit: Rainy season (June to November). With abundant rainfall, the lake expands to five to six times its dry-season size, creating a vast plateau lake with lush grasslands and large flocks of migratory birds.
  • Entrance Fee: Free. Only fenced horse ranches or specific photo spots may charge additional fees.

Is Napahai Lake worth visiting?

Napahai Lake is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you are drawn to natural landscapes rather than architecture or cultural landmarks. Its main appeal lies in its untouched highland wetland scenery. During the rainy season, the lake blends seamlessly with the surrounding grasslands, while distant snow-capped mountains and shifting light create a dramatic and ever-changing backdrop. If you enjoy photography, scenic travel, or simply want a quiet place to slow down, this is where you will truly feel it.

In terms of experience, cycling or driving around Napahai Lake is the best way to explore it. As you move along the route, the scenery constantly shifts. At one moment, you are close to the wetlands, and the next, you are surrounded by open grasslands, prayer flags, grazing animals, and distant mountains. This sense of continuous change is what makes Napahai Lake stand out.

Napahai Lake Entrance Fee Guide

Napahai Lake is an open natural area with no official entrance fee. Along the road, you will see multiple signs such as “Napahai Scenic Area Entrance” or “Yila Grassland Entrance,” but these are not official. They are privately operated spots that charge fees, and in most cases, they are not worth visiting.

Top Things to Do in Napahai Lake

Cycling Around the Lake

In my view, cycling around Napahai Lake is the most complete and rewarding way to experience it. Compared with stopping at just one viewpoint for photos, cycling or driving lets you truly feel the changing layers of the landscape, from the lake and grasslands to the snow mountains in the distance.

I recommend renting an electric scooter or a car in Dukezong Ancient Town. If you want to rent a car, you will need a temporary Chinese driving permit, and you can check this guide here: <China Temporary Driving Permit Guide> . Car rentals usually cost 70 CNY to 100 CNY per day. Electric scooters cost around 50 CNY per day. Make sure to rent one with a range of about 150 km, otherwise you may run out of battery on the road. The suggested route and navigation stops are as follows:

  • Start from Dukezong Ancient Town
  • First stop: Yasuwei Tent Tribe (Apple Maps/Amap), entry is free, but the photo setups inside charge extra. It is a great place for photos with grasslands, prayer flags, and little lambs
  • Second stop: Napahai Lake Shika Snow Mountain Largest Prayer Flag Viewpoint (Apple Maps/Amap), most prayer flag photo spots charge an entrance fee, but this one is free and usually less crowded. It is a good stop for prayer flag photos, and on the way you will pass the Qingkejia Scenic Avenue and also see Shika Snow Mountain
  • Third stop: Napahai Lake Bantu Erfei White Pagoda View Coffee (Apple Maps/Amap), this stop is mainly for grassland views, and you can also hold a little lamb for photos there for an extra fee
  • Fourth stop: Shangri-La Alpine Botanical Garden (Apple Maps/Amap), this is where you can get a full panoramic view of Napahai Lake. The scenery here is excellent, and I strongly recommend it. Even if some parts of the lake route are flooded, you can still come here

Shangri-La Alpine Botanical Garden

Shangri-La Alpine Botanical Garden offers the widest view on the entire Napahai Lake loop, and personally, it is one of the viewpoints I recommend most. From here, you can look down over the full shape of Napahai Lake. During the rainy season, the water stretches far into the distance, blending with the grasslands and surrounding mountains in rich layers. Compared with the lakeside perspective, the biggest advantage here is the panoramic view, which helps you better understand the overall structure of Napahai Lake as a wetland ecosystem. If you have limited time, this is the stop I would keep first.

Holding Lambs and Horseback Riding

In the grassland areas around Napahai Lake, holding lambs and horseback riding are two very popular activities, especially for families. The lambs are usually gentle, and you can either lead them or hold them for photos. The whole experience feels charming and relaxed, with a strong highland ranch atmosphere. Horseback riding, meanwhile, gives you a more direct taste of grassland life, as you move slowly through the pasture and connect with the landscape in a different way. Although these activities are fairly commercialized, they still offer a fun and easy experience, especially for first-time visitors to this kind of plateau scenery.

  • Price Reference: Holding a lamb costs 20 CNY per person, and horseback riding costs 100 CNY per hour.

There are not many dining options along the Napahai Lake loop. Aside from grilled lamb and beef at a few scenic stops, you will mostly find a handful of roadside cafés where you can briefly stop and rest. If you want a proper meal, it is better to eat well in the ancient town before setting out.

Napahai Lake is a standalone attraction, and most people finish visiting in about half a day. Because of that, I recommend staying near Dukezong Ancient Town. The best areas are around the East Gate and North Gate. On one hand, these areas sit right next to the ancient town, and you will find many Shangri-La hotels and guesthouses with Tibetan-style design, so you can easily walk into Dukezong Ancient Town. On the other hand, many of the main transportation options to nearby attractions also gather near these two entrances. The only thing to keep in mind is that hotel prices here tend to run a bit higher overall. For more details, see <Shangri-La Hotel Guide>.

How to Get to Napahai Lake

From Dukezong Ancient Town

I recommend renting a vehicle in Dukezong and starting a full loop around the lake from there!

Renting a Vehicle for the Lake Loop

I recommend renting either a car or an electric scooter. If you can rent a car, I would choose that first, because the weather on the road can still feel quite cold. You can follow the lake loop route mentioned above.

Hiring a Private Car

If you hire a private car from Dukezong Ancient Town for a loop around Napahai Lake, the cost is about 150 CNY. If you are traveling with elderly family members or children, this is a practical option to consider.

How to plan your Lijiang trip

Most travelers spend 2–3 days covering Lijiang and nearby highlights, while a 5–6 day itinerary is ideal if you want to combine Dali or Shangri-La and explore snow mountains, gorges and Tibetan culture at a relaxed pace. Here are our most popular private tour options:
