Hi, I’m Michael Zhang. As a Chinese traveler who has explored more than fifty countries, I firmly believe that the most surprising beauty often lies right under our feet. This time, I’d like to take you to the coast of Shenzhen to explore an underrated yet charming seaside destination—Xiaomeisha. If you love beaches, sunshine, and the deep blue sea—but prefer to avoid noisy crowds—then this travel guide will help you plan a peaceful and memorable escape.

About Xiaomeisha

Xiaomeisha is a picturesque beach located on the eastern coastline of Shenzhen’s Dapeng Bay. Often dubbed the “Hawaii of the East,” it is embraced by lush green mountains on three sides and faces the azure sea on the fourth. A crescent-shaped golden beach lies between the sky and waves, creating a natural retreat. Contrary to popular myths, the name “Xiaomeisha” doesn’t originate from a plum forest. Although the entire area is called Xiaomeisha, the only section open for swimming is Xiaomeisha Beach Resort, which is usually what people refer to when they mention Xiaomeisha. Two more must-visit attractions nearby are the Xiaomeisha Coastal Boardwalk and Xiaomeisha Ocean World.

Why You Need to Visit Xiaomeisha?

Famous for Its Unique Mountains and Sea Views

Compared to the wide-open coastline of Dameisha, Xiaomeisha offers a more dramatic coastal terrain. Jagged hills meet the sea in sweeping curves that paint a vivid and poetic landscape. The water here is clear, and while the sand is a bit coarser, it adds a sense of adventure for those who enjoy exploration. Xiaomeisha has retained much of its original natural charm, surrounded by dense greenery and offering a refreshing retreat from the summer heat.

A Variety of Family-Friendly Attractions

While Xiaomeisha may not offer as many water sports as Dameisha, it does have its own gems. Xiaomeisha Ocean World showcases a wide range of rare marine creatures and features stunning dolphin shows, making it ideal for those who prefer calm, educational experiences. You’ll also find surf pools and water slides that have been thoughtfully designed for visitors seeking active, playful adventures.

Besides the Xiaomeisha Beach Resort, one of the best experiences you can have is walking along the scenic boardwalk. Here’s a recommended route to follow:

  1. Starting point: Xiaomeisha Metro Station. After exiting the metro, follow the signs toward the coastal boardwalk entrance. The walk from the station to the boardwalk takes about 17 minutes.
  2. Xiaomeisha Boardwalk: Once you step onto the boardwalk, you’ll be greeted by the endless blue sea and a refreshing ocean breeze. It’s incredibly soothing. This boardwalk is one of the longest in Shenzhen, stretching about 2.8 km. You’ll walk right along the coastline, watching waves crash against rocks and possibly spotting seagulls along the way.
  3. Beizaijiao Beach: Keep walking and you’ll arrive at Beizaijiao Beach. It’s a lesser-known, clean, and quiet beach with crystal-clear water—perfect for photos and relaxing.
  4. Final stop: Beizaijiao Lighthouse. After crossing the beach, continue along the boardwalk and you’ll find the iconic red-and-white lighthouse. Located at one of Shenzhen’s easternmost points, it’s a fantastic spot for stunning views. From here, you can see the entire Dapeng Bay and even catch a glimpse of Hong Kong’s coastline in the distance.

Dameisha vs Xiaomeisha

Shenzhen’s Dameisha and Xiaomeisha are two beaches with very different vibes. Here’s a quick tip: visit Dameisha during the off-season, and Xiaomeisha during peak season. Since Xiaomeisha charges an entry fee, it’s usually less crowded. However, Dameisha has finer sand. For more details, see the comparison below:

Natural Scenery

  • Dameisha: Known for its wide beach and stunning views of the sea and sky. Perfect for those who enjoy grandeur and lively vibes. The sand is soft and fine, and sunsets here are especially beautiful.
  • Xiaomeisha: Offers a more private and serene setting. Its coastline is rugged and winding, nestled between mountains and the sea. The water is crystal clear, and while the sand is coarser, the environment feels more raw and authentic.

Attractions and Entertainment

  • Dameisha: Offers a wide range of water sports like jet skiing, banana boats, and snorkeling. It also has a large water park, making it ideal for family fun.
  • Xiaomeisha: While not as packed with activities, it focuses on quality. Highlights include Xiaomeisha Ocean World and a luxury beach resort—perfect for travelers who enjoy marine exploration and premium experiences.

Value for Money

  • Dameisha: Free to enter, with some paid services.
  • Xiaomeisha: Entry requires a ticket, and some attractions cost extra. However, its stunning mountain-sea scenery and more curated experiences make it worthwhile—especially for those seeking a higher-end getaway.

If you’re planning to visit both Dameisha and Xiaomeisha, consider staying in Yantian District. Look for accommodations near Haishan Metro Station. This area is convenient to both beaches and also gives you access to the Yantian Coastal Walk and the local seafood street. For more details, see: Shenzhen Hotel Recommendations
