Potatso National Park Overview
Potatso National Park, a China National 5A Scenic Area, stands as the most representative natural attraction in Shangri-La, Yunnan. The park ranges in elevation from 2,347 meters to 4,670 meters and features dramatic geological formations such as fault cliffs and deep valleys. At the same time, it protects diverse ecosystems, including pristine forests, alpine meadows, wetlands, and highland lakes.
The park mainly consists of the Bita Lake Nature Reserve and Shudu Lake Scenic Area. Top Things to Do in Potatso National Park
Yoyou Trail
This trail is a gravel and dirt path, and the gentle sound of flowing water along the way creates a very calming atmosphere. The total distance is about 2 kilometers, and it usually takes around 50 minutes to complete. This section can only be explored on foot. If your schedule is tight, you may consider skipping it, as it’s pleasant but not one of the core highlights of Potatso National Park.

Shudu Lake
Shudu Lake is the true highlight of Potatso National Park and a place you should not rush through. The lake’s crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding old-growth forests and alpine meadows, creating a landscape that feels almost like a painting. The walking route stretches about 3 kilometers along well-maintained wooden boardwalks, making it easy and enjoyable for most visitors. If you prefer to save energy, you can rent a mountain bike or take a boat ride across the lake. Keep in mind that the boat operates one way, so it’s best to walk to the far side first and then take the boat back to the starting point, allowing you to experience both perspectives of the lake.
- Note: After getting off the shuttle, you may encounter unofficial guides who follow you and suggest activities like stacking stones into mani piles and walking around them for blessings. They often start with something called “receiving blessings,” which involves extra charges. It’s generally not recommended unless you’re specifically interested.

Bita Lake
Bita Lake, which translates to “Emerald Lake” in Tibetan, is known for its quiet and deeply serene atmosphere. It’s one of the most peaceful areas in Potatso National Park. The trail here is easy and takes about 30 to 45 minutes, but unlike other sections, you’ll need to walk the same route back. The area is also home to many squirrels that are not afraid of people, making it a great place for close-up wildlife encounters. As you walk along the lake, it’s easy to slow down and fully take in the stillness of this high-altitude environment.

Recommended Itinerary for Potatso National Park
The route in Potatso National Park is very straightforward, so you’re unlikely to miss any major attractions. The typical route starts from the visitor center, continues to Yoyou Trail, then to Shudu Lake, and finally to Bita Lake.
- Tip: It’s best to enter the park before 1 PM. Otherwise, if you take your time with photos and walking, you may not finish the full route.
- Altitude: The park sits at a high elevation, with Shudu Lake reaching about 3,595 meters. It’s a good idea to prepare oxygen canisters in advance. If you experience strong altitude sickness, avoid visiting on your first day. Buying oxygen in town is also cheaper than inside the park.
- Environmental rules: Drones are not allowed in the park. Avoid stepping on the meadows or feeding wildlife. Respect the environment and take your trash with you.
- Return timing: If you’re taking the shuttle bus back to Dukezong Ancient Town, make sure to check the last departure time carefully.
