Hi, I’m Michael Zhang, a Chinese travel enthusiast who has spent years exploring destinations around the world. In this guide, I’ll take you to Huanglong Scenic Area in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. From the park’s unique landscape and ticket tips to the best visiting routes, I’ll share how to explore this UNESCO World Heritage mountain destination efficiently and comfortably.

Huanglong Scenic Area Overview

Huanglong Scenic Area is the best-preserved alpine wetland in China, located along a mountain ridge that gradually rises from south to north. The park covers about 700 square kilometers and sits roughly 100 km from Jiuzhaigou. Elevation ranges from 1,700 meters to 5,588 meters. Huanglong is listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and also holds China’s highest AAAAA tourist attraction rating.

The core area of Huanglong features more than 3,000 colorful pools scattered across the valley. The landscape is famous for its striking travertine formations, which create rich colors and unusual natural shapes. Most of the main scenery lies in Huanglong Valley beneath Xuebaoding Peak. Here, milky-yellow calcium carbonate deposits form terrace-like layers along the valley floor.

Snowmelt from the mountain summit flows down into small streams. As the water moves through the valley, it forms step-like ponds and shallow lakes. The water remains crystal clear, while minerals and surrounding forests create changing shades of gold, green, light blue, and deep blue. This layered landscape is what makes Huanglong in Sichuan one of the most recognizable natural wonders in China.

Is Huanglong Scenic Area Worth Visiting?

Yes, Huanglong is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy world-class natural landscapes or scenic mountain hiking. The park’s most famous feature is its vast travertine pool formations. Over several kilometers of valley terrain, thousands of pools created by calcium carbonate deposits spread across the hillside in layers. From a distance, they resemble a golden dragon winding through the valley, which is exactly where the name “Huanglong” comes from.

Under sunlight, these pools display different colors, including gold, emerald green, light blue, and deep blue. Huanglong holds one of the largest and best-preserved travertine landscapes in the world, making it a remarkable geological site.

Beyond the pools, Huanglong also features snow-covered peaks, dense forests, valleys, waterfalls, and a rare alpine wetland ecosystem. Within a single national park, visitors can see scenery that ranges from high-altitude mountains to colorful mineral pools. This combination of landscapes remains rare among natural destinations in China.

Many travelers also visit Huanglong together with Jiuzhaigou. While Jiuzhaigou feels like a fairy-tale world of lakes and forests, Huanglong resembles a natural geological museum. Its terraced mineral formations developed over thousands of years. The two destinations offer very different experiences, yet both leave a strong impression.

Huanglong Scenic Area Ticket Guide

Visitors can purchase three types of tickets in Huanglong Scenic Area: the entrance ticket (required), the cable car ticket (from the base to the middle of the mountain), and the sightseeing shuttle ticket (from the cable car upper station to Five-Color Pools). The main scenery in Huanglong is located around Five-Color Pools and the walking trail, so visitors must hike either uphill or downhill during the visit.

If you hike the entire route, the trip usually takes about five hours. If you take the cable car up and walk down, the total visit time is around three to four hours. Because of the high altitude, hiking uphill can feel exhausting. For most visitors, buying the entrance ticket plus the uphill cable car ticket is the best option.

The sightseeing shuttle costs 15 CNY one way. Families traveling with elderly visitors or children often choose this option because it reduces the walking distance between the cable car exit and Five-Color Pools.

Top Things to Do in Huanglong Scenic Area

Five-Color Pools

Five-Color Pools is the most iconic and important attraction in Huanglong Scenic Area. It sits at the very top of Huanglong Valley and forms the highest group of mineral pools in the park. Hundreds of travertine pools of different sizes spread across the hillside. They stack in layers and create many natural shapes. From above, the pools resemble a giant natural color palette. Under sunlight, the water shows shades of deep blue, emerald green, pale yellow, and golden tones, which explains the name “Five-Color Pools.”

The color changes mainly come from mineral deposits in the water, algae on the pool floor, and light refraction. On clear sunny days, the water looks exceptionally transparent. Visitors can even see the detailed textures on the pool bottom.

Huanglong Ancient Temple

Huanglong Ancient Temple sits near Five-Color Pools and stands out as one of the few historical and cultural landmarks inside Huanglong Scenic Area. The temple dates back to the Ming Dynasty and has long served as an important religious site for local Tibetan and Qiang communities.

The temple rests against the mountain, with snow peaks rising behind it. In front, visitors see layers of colorful pools and forest scenery. The atmosphere feels peaceful and quiet. Many travelers stop here after visiting Five-Color Pools to take a short break or explore the temple grounds. The setting offers a rare moment where natural landscape and spiritual culture meet in one place.

Zhengyan Colorful Pools

Zhengyan Colorful Pools is one of the largest and most densely distributed pool groups in Huanglong Valley. Numerous pools appear across the valley slope in layered formations. From a distance, they resemble a natural staircase of lakes.

Each pool displays slightly different colors because water depth, mineral deposits, and sunlight vary. Shades shift from light blue to emerald green and golden yellow. Together, these colors seem to compete for attention across the valley, which inspired the name “Zhengyan,” meaning competing beauty.

Golden Sand Paved Ground

Golden Sand Paved Ground represents a very distinctive travertine flow landscape within Huanglong Scenic Area. Here, mineral deposits form a broad and gently sloping golden terrace. Water flows slowly across the surface from higher ground. Under sunlight, the stream reflects a warm golden glow, making the area look like a golden carpet spread across the land. This unique appearance gives the site its name.

Unlike the layered pools, the scenery here feels more open. Water glides across the travertine surface and forms delicate textures and rippling reflections. From the wooden boardwalk, visitors can watch the stream move slowly over the golden deposits, creating a strong contrast with the surrounding forest and valley landscape.

Visitors to Huanglong Scenic Area can either hike the entire route or take the cable car up and walk down. Below are the routes and approximate travel times.

There is a restaurant near the Huanglong Ancient Temple area inside the park. A typical meal costs about 30 CNY, and grilled sausages cost around 10 CNY. However, bringing bread or chocolate is a good idea if you want quick energy during the hike. Many visitors prefer to head down earlier and eat a proper meal afterward.
