Taihu Lake Yuantouzhu Scenic Area Overview

Taihu Lake, also known as Zhenze or Juqu, spans over 2,400 square kilometers and is one of China’s five largest freshwater lakes. Yuantouzhu is a peninsula on the northwest shore of Taihu Lake in Wuxi. It gets its name from a giant rock jutting into the lake, shaped like a turtle raising its head. It is one of Taihu Lake’s main attractions and a national AAAAA-level scenic area. The lake’s scenery blends elegance and grandeur, with vast blue waters, misty waves, hidden peaks, and ever-changing vistas. Yuantouzhu occupies the most beautiful corner of Taihu Lake, offering pristine mountains, clear waters, and natural beauty. The renowned writer Guo Moruo once praised it: “The most exquisite spot of Taihu Lake is, after all, Yuantouzhu.” This acclaim has made the area famous both domestically and abroad.

Cherry Blossom Valley is located on the northern slope of Ludingshan in Yuantouzhu Scenic Area and is adjacent to the China-Japan Cherry Blossom Friendship Forest, blending seamlessly into one large area. Covering 200,000 square meters, it features more than 30,000 cherry trees across 68 varieties, making it the largest cherry blossom specialty garden in the park. The valley also includes architectural highlights such as the Cherry Viewing Tower, Nieyun Pavilion, Fanying Pavilion, and Clustered Spring Bridge.

Best Time to See the Cherry Blossoms: Early cherry blossoms at Yuantouzhu usually bloom in early March, mostly single or semi-double petals. Based on the flowering schedule, cherries are divided into early and late blossoms. Early cherries bloom in multiple varieties, with a flowering period of about one week from first bloom to petal fall. Late cherries typically bloom for 7–10 days, with a 5–12 day gap between early and late flowering depending on temperature. During this period, some hybrid cherry varieties also bloom. Generally, by mid-to-late March, Somei Yoshino cherries reach full bloom, which is considered the best time to visit. The exact timing may vary depending on the weather; if a cold front occurs, the peak bloom may be delayed.
