Hello, I’m Michael Zhang. After traveling across five continents and exploring coastlines through both cultural and historical perspectives, I’ve come to believe that a true beach trip is not only about seeing the ocean—it’s about understanding it. Over the years, I’ve returned to the shores of the South China Sea many times, and Dadonghai in Sanya has remained the place where I’m always happy to slow down. In this guide, I’ll introduce the key features, atmosphere, and the best ways to experience this bay. I’ll also share several practical, experience-based tips so your time here becomes smoother, richer, and far more enjoyable.
Summary
Dadonghai Overview
Dadonghai, officially known as Dadonghai Tourism Area, is a 4A-rated scenic spot in China. The coastline stretches for 2.9 kilometers and forms a crescent-shaped shallow bay embraced by mountains on three sides and the sea on the other. It sits in a tropical monsoon climate zone, making the weather warm year-round. This area is also Sanya’s first open and free scenic zone, covering 19.49 hectares of land and 26.08 hectares of sea. It includes seven functional water zones—such as swimming and diving areas—plus ecological and cultural experience sections. The beach offers fine white sand and excellent overall conditions. Because Dadonghai is close to downtown Sanya, visitors enjoy convenient access to hotels, guesthouses, bars, restaurants, and entertainment options. The well-developed facilities make it suitable for almost every type of traveler.

Why You Should Visit Dadonghai
Natural Scenery
- The crescent-shaped bay is surrounded by mountains on three sides and the ocean on the fourth. Soft white sand and coconut trees create a classic tropical scene, and winter water temperatures stay between 18–22°C, which makes Dadonghai a comfortable place for swimming even in cooler seasons.
- The water is clear with underwater visibility reaching about 10 meters. The flat sandy seabed makes this area ideal for snorkeling and diving.
Travel Facilities
- The area features seven functional water zones—such as swimming and diving areas—plus ecological and cultural experience sections. Visitors can enjoy jet skis, beach sports, and various water activities.
- Public buses from Sanya’s downtown, including routes 2 and 4, run directly to the area. A double-decker sightseeing bus also operates nearby, and taxi rides generally cost 10–40 CNY.
Top Things to Do in Dadonghai
Dadonghai Beach
As the earliest developed bay in Sanya, Dadonghai Beach played a major role in shaping the city’s tourism scene. The gentle slope and warm water make it a friendly place for beginners. Lifeguards patrol the coastline, offering reassurance for first-time swimmers. Visitors can rent swimming rings for about 10 CNY per item, which makes this spot perfect for families and relaxed beachgoers.

Water Sports
Compared with the higher prices at Wuzhizhou Island, water activities at Dadonghai are far more budget-friendly and convenient, especially for travelers staying in the city center who prefer not to travel too far. Most activities allow bargaining, making them a cost-effective way to enjoy the water.
- Jet Ski: Wearing inexpensive sunglasses helps, since the splash at high speed can make it hard to open your eyes. The ride feels fast and exciting, and photos look great.
- Banana Boat: A light-adventure activity with about a 20% chance of getting wet. Riders usually won’t fall into the water, and sunglasses are not recommended. It’s perfect for anyone who wants fun without too much intensity. Price: 80 CNY per person.
- Wake Surfing: A challenging activity with a 90% chance of falling into the water. Although the coach says they will “pull you up,” you still need to climb onto the board on your own. If you struggle, the coach will help, but it requires effort.
- Sea Kart: A slow-paced and simple experience with a 40% chance of getting wet. It suits visitors who prefer a relaxed style.
- “Yellow Duck” Ride: A more thrilling version of the banana boat with a 100% chance of getting soaked. Do not wear sunglasses or jewelry. Sitting in the front means taking the full force of the waves, and you’ll likely keep your eyes closed the entire time while holding the rope tightly. It’s one of the funniest group activities.

Seaside Bar Street
When the sun begins to set, Dadonghai’s nightlife comes alive. Seaside Bar Street becomes lively after dusk, filled with seafood stalls, casual bars, and live music. Ordering a seafood platter for about 100 CNY, sipping a drink, and listening to the sound of the waves create a relaxing atmosphere. It’s one of the best places to unwind in the evening.

Sunrise and Sunset Spots
The eastern side of Dadonghai offers an excellent view of the sunrise. Around 6:00 a.m., the sun rises from the horizon, and the sky gradually shifts from gray to pink to gold. Early visitors often jog, practice yoga, or simply enjoy the peaceful morning. It’s the most energizing moment of the day. Sunset is equally beautiful, with warm colors spreading across the sky.

Xiaodonghai Beach
Xiaodonghai Beach sits not far from Dadonghai and is one of my personal recommendations. If your hotel is nearby, this smaller beach is worth prioritizing. It attracts fewer visitors, feels quieter, and has clearer water than Dadonghai. Although the sand isn’t as fine, the natural atmosphere feels stronger.

Recommended Dadonghai Itinerary
Dadonghai is perfect for a relaxed day: start your morning with swimming or water activities, enjoy seafood for lunch, lie on the beach in the afternoon, and explore the bar street at sunset.
- tips
- The area gets lively and crowded, so keep your belongings safe; there are massage stands on the beach (50 CNY per hour) if you want to unwind.
- The small food street next to Linda Seaview Hotel offers great value, with authentic local favorites like coconut ice dessert and Lingshui sour rice noodles.
- Staying nearby is convenient for walking around early or late in the day, and hotel prices range from 100–1,000 CNY.
