Hi, I’m Michael Zhang. Over the past few years, I’ve traveled across dozens of countries and explored many overlooked historic districts throughout China. If you’re planning a trip to Fuzhou, Fuzhou Yantaishan Park is almost impossible to skip. This historic neighborhood blends century-old villas and former consulates with cafés, art spaces, and lively streets full of local character. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the history of Yantaishan, the must-see landmarks, a scenic walking route, and practical travel tips so you can explore what many people call the “Museum of International Architecture.”

Yantaishan Overview

Fuzhou Yantaishan Park is one of the must-visit places in Fuzhou. The area has a long and fascinating history. It first served as a military fortress in the late Yuan Dynasty. Later, the Ming and Qing governments rebuilt its defensive structures. After Fuzhou opened as a treaty port in 1844, 17 countries established consulates, churches, and schools here. As a result, Western and Chinese cultures blended together, leaving behind hundreds of buildings in different architectural styles. Because of this, the area is often called the “Museum of International Architecture.” Today, many historic buildings have been carefully restored and given new life. You’ll find museums, cafés, galleries, and creative shops inside these old villas. The district still carries a strong historical atmosphere, yet it also feels youthful and artistic. Overall, it’s a wonderful place for a relaxed walk while exploring one of the most unique historic districts in Fuzhou.

Why You Should Visit Yantaishan

A Museum of International Architecture

As one of the key landmarks from the era when Fuzhou became a treaty port, Yantaishan once hosted consulates and offices from 17 countries, including the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Germany, and Japan. Today, around 191 historic buildings still remain. These buildings reflect many architectural styles, such as Romanesque, Baroque, and Victorian. For example, the former U.S. Consulate at No.2 Aiguo Road now operates as the Yantaishan History Museum. Meanwhile, Lequn Building once served as a foreign social club more than a century ago. The Former Residence of the Min Customs Tax Division has also been transformed into a cultural exhibition space. Together, these buildings tell the story of Fuzhou’s international past.

Cultural and Lifestyle Experiences

Yantaishan also carries the footprints of many well-known cultural figures. Writers and artists such as Ye Shengtao, Lin Huiyin, and Hu Die once lived or worked here. In fact, Lin Huiyin wrote her famous poem “You Are the April of This World” while staying at Koyuan in this area. Beyond its historical significance, many old buildings have been revitalized into creative spaces, boutique cafés, lifestyle shops, historic villa hotels, and art galleries. More than 70% of the businesses here are local independent brands, which gives the district a unique cultural atmosphere. In the evening, the area becomes even more lively. Yantaishan is recognized as a national night-time cultural tourism district in China. Warm lights fill the narrow streets, rooftop terraces catch the sunset, and craft beer bars create a relaxed nightlife scene that attracts both locals and visitors.

Daguan Art Museum (Lequn Building)

The Daguan Art Museum is located inside Lequn Building, one of the most recognizable historic buildings in Fuzhou Yantaishan Park. Built in the late 19th century, the building once served as an important gathering place for foreign residents in Fuzhou. Former Residence of the Min Customs Tax Division

The Former Residence of the Min Customs Tax Division is one of the best-preserved historic buildings in the Yantaishan area. During the late Qing Dynasty, it served as the official residence of the Min Customs Tax Division officer, who oversaw customs operations at the Port of Fuzhou. The building blends Western architectural structures with traditional Chinese elements, creating an elegant courtyard layout and spacious interior spaces. After restoration, the building now functions as a cultural exhibition space that presents the history of Yantaishan and the story of Fuzhou after it opened as a treaty port.
