Hey everyone, I’m Alex Chen, a Chinese backpacker who loves wandering into the hidden corners of the world. For me, traveling isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about living them. I believe that with a limited budget, you can still gain unlimited experiences. This time, I set off to explore Pingtan Island in Fujian—a place often called “China’s version of Jeju Island.” While most travelers flock to Xiamen, few truly know Pingtan. The island has unreal blue waters, stone-built villages, the smell of sea salt, and that perfectly slow rhythm of life. If you’re looking for a quiet coastal escape far from the crowds, Pingtan definitely deserves a spot on your next travel list.

Pingtan Island Introduction

Pingtan Island, also known as Haitan Island or Haishan, is the largest island in Fujian Province and the fifth largest in China. It stretches about 29 kilometers from north to south and 19 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area of 324.13 square kilometers.

The island is home to both cultural relics and natural wonders, including S36 Lake, Shipaiyang Reef, Xianren Well, Yipianwa Village, and the Keqiutou Archaeological Site. Visitors can also relax at the Longfengtou Resort and Tannan Bay Beach.

With its scenery and island lifestyle, Pingtan rivals places like Xiamen, Jeju Island in South Korea, and Okinawa in Japan—yet it remains far less commercialized.

Why You Should Visit Pingtan Island

Natural Scenery

Pingtan Island consists of 126 small islands and over 700 reefs, offering long stretches of coastline, crystal-clear waters, and soft sandy beaches such as Longfengtou Beach and Tannan Bay. The island’s unique marine erosion landforms—like Banyang Stone Sail, Donghai Wonderland, and General Mountain—showcase stunning geological wonders. With well-preserved ecosystems and multiple nature reserves, Pingtan is also a great place for eco-tourism and birdwatching.

Cultural Heritage

Traditional stone houses, known as Shitoucao, define the island’s architectural identity. Villages like Beigang preserve this heritage beautifully. Historically, Pingtan also played a role in China’s coastal defense, leaving behind fascinating relics such as General Mountain Fortress. Meanwhile, local folk traditions like the Bench Dragon Dance and Yuyu Lantern Festival bring the island’s vibrant culture to life, offering visitors a deeper look into its community spirit.

Top Things to Do in Pingtan Island

Main Attractions

68 Nautical Miles Scenic Area

If Pingtan is China’s most “ocean-scented” island, then the 68 Nautical Miles Scenic Area is its shining gem. Known for its blend of maritime culture and dramatic sea views, this spot features striking marine erosion landscapes and scenic boardwalks that stretch over the water. You can walk along the glass bridge, take photos by the lighthouse, or simply enjoy the waves crashing below your feet. It’s also the closest point on the Chinese mainland to Taiwan, which adds a bit of geographical excitement to your visit.

Longfengtou Beach

This is the oldest and most developed beach in Pingtan Island, and also a favorite among locals. The sand is soft, the slope gentle, and the water clean—perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or watching the sunrise. Along the shore, you’ll find cafés, restaurants, surf shops, and even electric scooter rentals for a breezy ride along the coast. For budget travelers, early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal: fewer people, lower expenses, and golden-hour photos that look straight out of a movie.

Xianren Well Scenic Area

Xianren Well is one of the island’s most remarkable natural wonders. Legend says an immortal once bathed here, hence its name. In reality, it’s a massive sea-eroded sinkhole about 43 meters deep. When waves crash into the pit, they create a booming echo that feels both thrilling and surreal. From the viewing platform above, the swirling waves below make for spectacular photography—especially at sunset when the light hits the cliffs just right.

Beibu Bay Ecological Corridor

If you enjoy cycling or leisurely strolls, you’ll love the Beibu Bay Ecological Corridor. This green coastal route stretches for more than ten kilometers, flanked by blue ocean on one side and lush vegetation on the other. Several lookout points and rest areas along the way make it perfect for slow-paced exploration. The best time to visit is at sunset, when the sky and sea merge into shades of orange and pink—a romantic sight you won’t forget.

Tannan Bay

Praised as the “Most Beautiful Beach in Fujian,” Tannan Bay is one of the island’s most beloved natural coastlines. The waters here are clear and turquoise, the sand smooth and golden, and the horizon endless. The bay includes several beaches, but Tianmeiao and Dabeiao stand out as the top picks. Tianmeiao is ideal for photography and camping, while Dabeiao offers a more untouched, peaceful vibe—perfect for travelers seeking solitude and natural beauty.

General Mountain (Jiangjunshan)

Want a panoramic view of Pingtan Island’s coastline? Head up General Mountain. It’s an easy hike with rewarding views of the Haitan Strait from the summit. The name comes from a general who once stationed troops here centuries ago. Today, it’s one of the best spots to capture sweeping ocean vistas, wind turbines, and the island’s unique geography. On clear days, the horizon blurs into a perfect line of blue—sky and sea as one.

Pingtan Island is large, and the best routes divide naturally into north and south lines—ideal for a three-day, two-night trip to soak up the island lifestyle.

  • Suggested 3D2N Itinerary:
    • Day 1: Northern Route – Longfengtou Beach (sunrise) → Xianren Well (worth skipping if time is tight) → Beigang Cultural Village (stone-house architecture) → Island Loop Road → Changjiang’ao Wind Farm (sunset)
    • Day 2: Southern Route – Houyan Island (closest point to Taiwan) → Tannan Bay (beach loungers + cafés) → Elephant Trunk Bay (great for drone shots, check tide times!)
    • Day 3: Deep Exploration – Beibu Bay Ecological Corridor (windmills + glass walkway) → Maotouqian Hill (panoramic view) → Return trip
  • Tips:
    • Rent an e-scooter for flexible island travel; prices range from 80–120 CNY/day. Beigang Village has the most rental shops.

    • Pingtan feels straight out of a Studio Ghibli film—riding a scooter through the sea breeze, enjoying a bowl of hot seafood porridge, and letting the sound of waves wash your worries away.

There are many restaurants across the island, but the best variety and prices are in the main town. It’s better to avoid dining right next to tourist attractions, where prices tend to be high and food quality lower.
